The 35-year-old player has published a video on social networks announcing this decision that nobody expected to be so imminent

By surprise, without anyone expecting it or having leaked anything, Gerard Piqué announced this Thursday that he is retiring and that Saturday's game against Almería will be his last game at Camp Nou and surely his last night as a professional footballer.

Through a video in which he assured that he had something to say to the Catalans, he announced this decision that nobody expected to be so imminent. But he assures that he has already fulfilled as a footballer all the dreams he had as a child and that he feels that it is time to close a stage

In the video, his voice sounds off speaking in Catalan, while the subtitles appear in Spanish and English. And she tells the decision that she has made. Images of a baby, of a child on the lawn of his lifelong stadium, and current ones with a face of deep reflection, are seen. She also acknowledges that he is not going to play for any other team.

"Culés, I'm Gerard, these weeks a lot of people talk about me, and now I'm the one who's going to talk". Like many of you, I've always been a Barça fan, I belong to a very footballing and culé family. And since I was little I didn't want to be a footballer, I wanted to be a Barça player”, the video starts.

“Lately I have thought a lot about that boy, who would make it to the Barça first team, who would fulfill all his dreams and be world and European champions, who would be one of the captains”, he continues.

“Barcelona has given me everything and now I have decided that it is time to close the cycle, and I have always said that after Barça there would be no other team and that is how it will be. I will become one more culé. And you know me, sooner or later I'll be back. We'll see each other at Camp Nou”, he concludes.

A myth of Barcelona

Gerard Piqué is on his way to 36 years old and in recent times he had lost importance in Xavi's schemes. Last year he was a fixture, but this season he was very clear about his substitute status and he only appeared in the starting eleven when losses accumulated in defense. He is now leaving after 614 games played with the Barça shirt, in which he has scored 53 goals.

A controversial career-ending

The last times of Piqué's career have been marked by controversy, especially due to the commercial relationship between his company, Cosmos, and the Spanish Football Federation on behalf of the organization of the Spanish Super Cup in Arabia.
